Just one day of your life can change someone else’s forever!
Home fires are the nation’s most frequent disaster, claiming seven lives every day. But having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half.
That’s why we’re rallying amazing volunteers, such as yourselves, to install free smoke alarms during a Sound the Alarm event in Hanford. This is a great opportunity for you to encourage your friends and family to join you on making the community safer.
When you volunteer, we'll meet at our home base location to check-in. There will be breakfast, water, and coffee for you to enjoy while we wait for everyone to arrive.
We'll gather everyone in a group to go over some expectations for the day and then we'll break out into our three groups for training - Installer, Educator, and Documenter (learn more about each of those roles on the right).
Once training has been completed, head out into the community in teams of three with all the necessary equipment provided by the Red Cross.
You'll use the map that you've been given, and your team will go door to door asking people if they have working smoke alarms. If they don't, we'll install them for free! We'll also talk to families about home fire safety and document their information for our records.
Before you know it, it will be time to head back to our home base location to celebrate the incredible work that we've done and enjoy more refreshments and snacks.
Three Sound the Alarm Event Roles
Installer - Just like you might imagine, this role installs the smoke alarms for the family. We'll provide you with all the necessary tools and train you on the day of the event
Documenter – As the Documenter, you'll gather some information from the family, record how many smoke alarms we installed and what information we gave to them.
